Our Story: Family-Owned, Sustainable Berry Seed Oil Production A family owned Washington business making berry seed oils and powders from the seed up. A Family Business from the Beginning Berry Beautiful is a family owned business based in Washington State. We make berry seed oils and powders from the seed up, drying, cleaning, cold pressing, filtering, bottling and shipping our products ourselves. Our story has never been one straight line. It grew out of our family’s different interests, skills and life experiences. Bob has always been a builder and problem solver, with a long history of creating businesses and working on practical solutions in industries he believes in. Ivonne is an artist, photographer, teacher, gardener and formulator, with a deep love for plants and the natural world. Joy helped us better understand the importance of brand, retail and presentation as Berry Beautiful began to take shape. Erin works across seed drying, sales, customer communication, documentation and daily operations. Like many family businesses, Berry Beautiful came together through a mix of curiosity, necessity and a lot of hands-on work. The first seeds of Berry Beautiful started on Vashon Island with Ivonne helping her dear friend María Fé create natural creams and herbal infusions under their brand, Vanica, Vashon Botanics. Those early days were full of garden grown herbs, small batch experimenting and a shared love for simple skincare made from plants. Ivonne grew and worked with botanicals like St. John’s Wort, echinacea, calendula and lavender. The goal was never to create something overly complicated. It was to make something honest, beautiful and useful from ingredients we understood. As our family began looking more closely at natural formulations, we kept running into the same challenge: finding high quality carrier oils with clear sourcing and a short, understandable supply chain. We would see avocado oil from Kenya, grapeseed oil from South Africa, borage seed oil from China and sunflower oil from Ukraine or Argentina. There is nothing automatically wrong with imported oils, but it raised a real question for us. Many of these crops are grown here in the United States, and we knew there were domestic growers and producers doing good work. So why were so many carrier oils moving through long supply chains when they could be made closer to home? That question became one of the ideas that shaped Berry Beautiful. Instead of only looking for better oils to buy, we started asking what oils we could produce ourselves from crops grown in our own region. Turning Berry Seeds into Something Useful That search led us to raspberry seeds. Washington is one of the most important red raspberry growing regions in the country, and Whatcom County is especially known for red raspberries. During berry processing, seeds are separated from the fruit stream and can easily be treated as waste if there is not a good use for them. We saw something different. Those seeds held oil, fiber and value. They were not just a byproduct. They were an opportunity to make a useful ingredient from a crop already being grown close to home. Over time, this became the foundation of Berry Beautiful: take seeds from the berry industry, dry them carefully, cold press them into oil and mill the remaining seed material into powders. It connected Ivonne’s love for natural skincare, Bob’s love for building processes, Joy’s eye for brand and retail and Erin’s work in operations, customer communication and seed drying. The first real step was seed drying. Raspberry seeds come out of fruit processing wet, heavy and unstable. Before they can be cold pressed or milled, they need to be dried carefully and handled at the right time during harvest. We did not start by buying a finished system or handing the work off to someone else. Bob and Erin designed and built our first seed dryer themselves. We rented space on a friend’s property, worked with friends to fabricate and fine tune the equipment and learned through a lot of testing, adjusting and problem solving. During those first harvests, Bob and Erin lived in Whatcom County for two months at a time, drying raspberry seeds as they came in. Erin would drive to farms and processing sheds to pick up seed, while Bob kept the dryer running day after day. It was exhausting work, but it became the foundation for everything that came next. Drying the seed ourselves gave us a level of control that most brands never have. We were not just buying an ingredient on paper. We were learning how to make it from the beginning. From Seed Drying to Seed Pressing Once we had high quality dried seed, the next step was pressing it into oil. At the time, Vashon Island did not have an affordable space where we could set up the kind of food grade production facility we needed, so we built that part of the business in Tukwila, Washington. For years, Bob and Erin commuted from Vashon to Tukwila to keep the press running. Some days were long 12 hour shifts, and during busy production periods the work could feel constant. Pressing, filtering, bottling, cleaning, maintaining equipment and solving problems all had to happen by hand. For eight years, we pressed every drop of oil ourselves in Tukwila. Those years taught us the real work behind specialty seed oils. They also shaped how we think about quality. Natural oils are agricultural products. Color, aroma and feel can vary from crop to crop and batch to batch, especially when the oil is kept raw, virgin and unrefined. After nearly a decade, we made a bigger commitment to the business and built our own production facility on Vashon Island in 2018. With the help of Joy and Matt, Bob and Erin built the facility on the property with space for pressing, filtration, seed storage, packaging, shipping and a clean room for filling. It was built around the way we actually work, with just enough room to move equipment, handle seed and keep production close to home. Today, our seed drying work is still tied closely to the berry harvest in Whatcom County. Our oil pressing, filtering, bottling, labeling and shipping happen at our facility on Vashon Island. That keeps the process short, transparent and in our family’s hands. Berry Beautiful is still a small family business, but our work has grown in many directions. We are a retail brand, a producer of berry seed oils and powders and an ingredient supplier to businesses that care about sourcing, quality and how their ingredients are made. Bob presses and filters the oils. Ivonne formulates, grows and works with herbs, creates infusions and packs every order by hand. Erin still does the seed drying, sales, customer communication, documentation and daily operations. Joy’s early help with branding and retail still influences how we present the products today. Like most family businesses, everyone does a bit of everything when the work needs to get done. We make Red Raspberry Seed Oil, Cranberry Seed Oil and berry seed powders from seeds that come from the berry industry. Instead of treating those seeds as waste, we turn them into useful ingredients for skincare, personal care, formulation, nutrition and pet food applications. Over the years, our work has grown from a family idea into a small manufacturing business with products sold directly to customers, used by formulators and manufacturers and carried by stores that care about the products they put on their shelves. We are a food grade licensed processor and USDA Organic manufacturer, and Berry Beautiful is also listed as a supplier of raspberry seed oil and raspberry seed powder/fiber by the Washington Red Raspberry Commission. Because we work so closely with berry seeds and agricultural byproducts, we have also built relationships across the larger ingredient world. When we do not produce a particular ingredient ourselves, we can sometimes help brands and formulators connect with other upcycled, regionally sourced or specialty ingredients through trusted partners. We are not a company that simply buys finished oil and puts our label on it. We dry the seed, clean it, cold press it, filter it, bottle it and ship it ourselves. That is why we can talk about our products in detail. We know the process because we do the work.
