In December 2004, I remember counting down the days until his arrival from Oklahoma to Alberta. I had never seen him in person—only watched grainy videos and trusted the encouragement of friends and mentors who believed he was the perfect fit for my competitive goals. I took a leap of faith… and bought the horse I’d only dreamed about. When Scottie stepped off the trailer, he was everything I had hoped for: stunning, powerful, eager to connect, a moment I'll never forget. But behind his beauty lived a lifetime of strain and digestive concerns. Years of intensive training, stalled living, inconsistent diets, and constant vaccinations had taken a toll on him. He battled ulcers. He was a top show horse on paper—yet inside, he simply wasn’t thriving. Determined to give him a better life, I turned to a more natural approach. I knew horses were meant to graze freely, not live off limited flake feedings. I tried every hay net I could find, but none were safe or effective—most had large holes that risked entanglement or encouraged overeating. Fueled by a deep love for Scottie and a refusal to settle for less, I designed my own net: safer, more functional, and built to mimic natural grazing behavior. After countless trials, Scottie finally had constant access to forage, and he blossomed. His stress faded. His digestive health improved. His spirit returned. Friends and fellow horse owners began to notice the transformation and asked for nets of their own. That growing demand sparked the beginning of Natural Alternative Grazers, commonly known today as Nag Bags. The early days were humble, cutting nets by hand in front of our garage, with my daughters helping after school, and my partner Shawn wrapping nets into the night. But the mission was clear: to help horses everywhere live healthier, happier lives through better, more natural feeding. Freeing both owners and horses of modern day flake feeding. As we look back on more than two decades of Nag Bags, one truth stands at the center of it all: We would not be here without you.
