Ora’s Amazing Story (abridged version) Hint: It didn't begin as an herbal skincare business. In 2010 my 1 year old daughter developed eczema. I took her to the doctor to make sure it was in fact manageable eczema and nothing requiring urgent medical care. To my surprise, the Dr prescribed antibiotics and steroids without asking any questions about her diet, how long she had been having these symptoms, or investigating her environmental exposures, nothing. This was a big red flag for me as a mom. Having an education in biology and plant based nutrition as well as some experience with herbs, I knew there must be a better way. I consulted with some master herbalists and naturopaths (ND’s) who all advised that I make her a salve, so I did. That salve is now known as Touchy Skin Salve ! It worked! I never filled those prescriptions, because I didn’t need to. I already knew that herbs work, but I was still Amazed at how effective it was in soothing my daughters itchy, inflamed, and miserable skin! - Ora Making salve is like making a pot of soup. You don’t make one bowl, right? So I had extras, of course. I gave them out to friends, family, teachers etc. One of those teachers came to me a few weeks later gushing about how she could wear sandals while gardening again because the cracks on her heels were healed. She wanted more, but I didn’t have more, so she offered to pay me to make another batch. “Yes. Yes, I would be happy to make more,” was my reply. And so I did, and Ora’s Amazing Herbal was born. A little backstory about me.. . In 1991, I was sick with Crohn’s disease. I was taking steroids as part of a treatment plan after being released from the hospital. I was hospitalized for treatment of life threatening symptoms - hemorrhaging and rapid weight loss of more than 10% of my body weight. I was weak, faint, exhausted and miserable. I was 18 years old and was tired of being sick all the time. I told my doctor that I still just didn’t feel well, like I used to. That doctor looked at me the way one may look at a toddler who doesn’t want to go to sleep, and said to me, “Well, you may just have to get used to it.” He seemed to think that I needed to simply accept sub-optimal health as my new reality for the rest of my life. He even went so far as to tell me that my diet would not have any impact, and not to bother making lifestyle changes. This is so obviously not true, that even at 18 I knew this was ridiculous. To make a long story short, this experience guided me toward taking a more proactive role in my own health and healing. I began discovering the Amazing healing that holistic medicine, plant based nutrition, herbs and a clean lifestyle have to offer. Years later, I took what I had learned when I was 18 and applied it as a mother to help my daughter, and thus Ora’s was born. Let's jump another 15ish years.
