How a preventable death in the Caribbean led to a mission to equip the world's protectors with the right tools The night MED-TAC International was born, I was a third-year medical student in the Caribbean, kneeling in the back of an under-equipped ambulance, watching a man bleed to death with my hands on his leg. The call came in around 11 PM. "Motorcycle accident. Severe arterial bleeding. ETA eight minutes." I knew exactly what needed to happen. I'd studied hemorrhage control. I understood tourniquets, pressure, wound packing, physiology. On paper, this was a survivable injury. We had nothing to work with. No tourniquet. No hemostatic gauze. No real pressure bandage. Just some standard gauze pads, a couple of adhesive bandages, and gloves. I held pressure. I packed the wound with gauze that immediately soaked through. I called for more gauze. We ran out. I used my hands. He kept bleeding. We lost him about ninety minutes later in the hospital — not because his injuries were unsurvivable, but because he spent eight minutes bleeding in that ambulance without the equipment that should have been there. That night, one thing became painfully clear: It's not enough to know what to do. If you don't have the right tools, knowledge dies on contact with reality. My father — an ER physician for over thirty years — gave me advice that changed everything: "Then fix it. You know what works. You know what they need.
